Method

How each report is measured

Each bar is one of the company's quarterly reports, oldest on the left: the stock's move from the last close before the results to the second close after them, minus the S&P 500's over the same days. Report days come from the company's SEC filings (8-K item 2.02); a filing within 45 days before another counts as the same quarter, and only an unbroken run of quarters is shown (a gap of more than 150 days, a report missing from the filings, ends it). The typical move is the median size of the moves, up or down. How a stock took its past reports says little about the next one.

How the peer figures are measured

Quarterly reports since 2010 from companies in the same sector and size where there are enough, from the last close before the release to the second close after it, against the S&P 500. "Slowed" and "sped up" compare the quarter's year-on-year revenue growth with the quarter before; they are not analyst estimates. Many fourth-quarter reports are left out, because that quarter's revenue is filed only as part of the year. Measured on Steady's price history, which holds only companies still trading, so companies that later failed are missing and the picture is kinder than it was. A pattern across many companies says little about any one company.

Steady publishes these figures for information only. Nothing here is investment advice.
